Gundel Zwickelt’s

golden beer in mug with pewter lid and bottle
Gundel Zwickelt’s

Brewery: Gundel
Town:
Barthelmesaurach
Style: Zwickel
Color: unfiltered light golden

Head: white,
rocky, lasting
Nose: grain, light Spalter hops, toasted malt, slightly yeast
y, faint honey
Body: medium

Palate: slightly grainy, underlying Spalter hops
, faint yeast
Finish: clean, dry, semi-bitter

Served: from a bottle bought in the brewery

Impression: Zwickel is one of the more variable styles. They can be quite bland or dry and hoppy like this one. It looks like an unfiltered version of their very hoppy Pils with a gorgeous rocky head but along with grain, a touch of honey in the nose. While not as bitter as the Pils, it’s in no way sweet. There’s a bit of yeast in the mix too. It’s more balanced than the Pils and would make perhaps the best session beer of the Gundel beers I’ve had, especially at 5%
