Greif-R
Brewery: Greifenklau
Town: Bamberg
Style: Rauchbier
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, creamy, thinning
Nose: slight malt, hint of cereal, faint smoke
Body: medium
Palate: balanced, malty, grainy, light smoke, underlying hops
Finish: clean, semi-dry, semi-bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: I was happy to find the Rauchbier on tap again. I’d had it a few years previously and liked it and was disappointed when I was there last summer to find a Zwickel on in its place. This is a very balanced brew and reminds you of a Kellerbier with a malty/grainy palate with underlying hops to dry it out in the finish. There is a light smokiness to it and would be a good way to introduce someone to the style. Even for those of us who like the style, it’s a nice light version of it meant for quaffing, something easy to do in Greifenklau’s idyllic Biergarten.
