Eckerts Kellerbier by Gänstaller

Brewery:  Gänstaller
Town:
Schnaid
Style: Kellerbier
Color:
unfiltered amber
Head: white, creamy, thinning

Nose:
grainy
Body: medium

Palate:
grainy, dry, fruity, a touch of butterscotch
Finish: clean, dry, semi-bitter

Served: on tap at Eckerts Wirtshaus in Bamberg

Impression: Gänstaller is one of the most respected small breweries in Franconia despite having replaced another beloved favorite Friedel in Schnaid. There is no brewery tap in the small village so you have to find the beer elsewhere, no easy undertaking as much of it is shipped to other countries willing to pay more for the privilege. I’d heard they brewed beer for Eckerts Wirtshaus in Bamberg and we’d passed it numerous times. We finally stopped in and not only did they have this contracted brew from Gänstaller but also one of the brewery’s beers as well. This Kellerbier was typical of the style and less robust than the featured Zwickel Pils. That said, it was more balanced and perhaps an easier beer to session on, with a dry fruity palate which had a slight touch of butterscotch that wasn’t obtrusive.

Next beer or back to the beer list.
