Brewery: Hetzel (Frauendorfer)
Head: white, rocky, sudsy
Nose: lightly smoky
Palate: malty, hoppy, slight smoke
Finish: clean, semi-dry, semi-bitter
Served: from a bottle bought in the area
Impression: Despite not being able to visit the brewery with its incredibly limited opening hours, I have managed to get a fair range of their beers in bottles. I was quite surprised to see this Rauchbier as it was one I hadn’t realized was even brewed. It poured with a massive sudsy head and had a light mix of smoky malt and hops in the nose. It’s hoppy as I now expect of Frauendorfer beers. According to the label, the smoked malt is wheat but I don’t taste it personally. It does have a nice light smokiness and would be a good beer to give to someone who either doesn’t like smoke beer or hasn’t been exposed to it. It’s also a nice hoppy session beer for those who just want a touch of smoke. Deceptive at 5.4%.
