Brewery: Brauerei Mager
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, rocky
Nose: rich malt, faint spice
Palate: malty, hint of spice, underlying hops
Finish: lingering, semi-dry
Served: from a bottle bought in the area
Impression: This brewery makes the kind of Dunkles that generally keeps you from trying anything else, especially if only available in bottles. A friend got this Märzen when we were there so I had a sip and wasn’t impressed. Admittedly, we’d had a few of their superlative Dunkles prior. So, I was happy to recently pick up a bottle online. It’s light for a Märzen but does have some spice in the nose. While not a classic stylistically, it’s a nicely balanced session beer with a bit more hop punch than most Märzens. If a Märzen fan, it’s worth picking up and if I ever saw it on tap at the brewery, I’d get one. I wouldn’t “waste” a Dunkles if limited to one visit at their pub though.
