Head: white, rocky
Nose: yeasty, malty, fruity
Palate: malty, yeasty, some typical banana/clove
Finish: lingering, fairly clean
Served: from a bottle bought in Franconia
Impression: I finally got a chance to try one of the top rated Weizens in Franconia, Gutmann. So, I was intrigued to hear they also brewed a Weizenbock and was happily shocked to find a bottle in a Munich beer store. Franconian beers aren’t so popular here in my hometown but I had noticed the regular Gutmann Weizen as of late so was hopeful. It’s a great looking Weizenbock with a perfect honeycomb hue and gorgeous rocky head. The yeast in the nose mingles well with the otherwise fruity palate. Much like the regular Weizen, it has a subdued banana/clove element. I found the Weizenbock a lot less balanced then the every day beer but it wasn’t particularly cloying, especially at 7.2% It’s certainly a good Weizenbock but not up there with the best.
