Trunk Nothelfer Silber Bock

golden beer in glass with bottle
Trunk Nothelfer Silber Bock

Brewery: Brauerei Trunk Alte Klosterbrauerei
Town: Vierzehnheiligen
Style: Hellerbock
Color: golden
Head: white, rocky
Nose: malt, hint of grain
Body: medium
Palate: malty, light grain, underlying hops
Finish: clean, semi-dry, semi-bitter

Served: from a bottle bought locally

Impression: Really love their regular beers and the few seasonal beers I’ve had on tap but have yet to try either this Hellerbock or their Dunklerbock so was happy to find the former even if only in bottled form. It poured with a gorgeous rocky head and nice malty nose. There was a nicely integrated grain element intermingling with the underlying hops for a somewhat dry, semi-bitter finish. It’s dangerous at 6.8% and while it doesn’t really jump out at you, it’s a well made Hellerbock with more hops than have progressively become common.

Next beer or back to the beer list.

  1. This is one of the funniest beer names I have seen in a while: Nothelfer = emergency helper.
But it’s logical since it comes from a town called Vierzehnheiligen = 14 angels.
In Humperdinck’s opera Hänsel & Gretel, the children both have the same dream while sleeping in the forest, that 14 angels have come down to watch over them.
(I was once asked to play the silent role of one of the 14 angels at the Frankfurt Opera, because they thought I looked like Sigmund Freud, but I had to turn them down because I was too busy teaching.)

    1. That’s funny and you do look a bit like Freud now that you mention it. It’s one of the hikes in my book and an incredible church as well as producing some excellent beer. We’ll have to get you to to this area one day. If you need some help, there are 14 angels waiting. 😉
