Heller Festmärzen

amber beer in glass with logo and bottle
Brauerei Heller Festmärzen

Brewery: Hans Heller
Town:
Herzogenaurach
Style:
Märzen
Color:
unfiltered, dark amber
Head: white
, creamy, thinning
Nose:
rich malt, caramel
Body: full, soft

Palate: richly malty, caramel, balanced

Finish: clean, bittersweet

Served: from a bottle at the brewery

Impression: I don’t generally drink bottled beer when at a brewpub but I was on foot and had another bus trip to my overnight stop (another brewery!) and this was a seasonal beer I wasn’t sure I’d see again. The old brewery was happy when I ordered it and he dug out a nice logo glass and brought it over with the bottle to let me pour it. It was worth getting just for that. When it turned out to be really good, it was a bonus. It was oddly for the style unfiltered and quite dark. The thinning head was worrying but it had a rich malty nose with a hint of caramel and the flavor was similar. For the richness, it had a very clean finish, just on the edge of bittersweet. I told him it was excellent and you could tell he was proud. As great as the Export is, it was worth getting and if I’d been in a car, I’d have bought some to go.

Next beer or back to the beer list.
