Greifla Schwarz

black beer in mug with bottle
Greifla Schwarz

Brewery: Greif
Town:
Forchheim
Style:
Schwarzbier
Color:
unfiltered black
Head:
tan, dense
Nose:
roasted malt, some hops
Body:
medium
Palate: dry, malty with slight roast overridden with fair hopping

Finish: clean, dry, bitter

Served: from a bottle at the brewery

Impression: This was a revisit primarily to try their Hell from gravity dispense but how could I resist a beer just released that day, especially after the prodding of a local patron who seemed to love the stuff. It was only available in bottle but certainly a fresh sample as just put on sale that day. It’s a take on town rival brewery Neder’s popular Schwarze Anna. This one came out about as black as can be with a gorgeous tan head. There was some roast in the nose but the flavor wasn’t as roasty as this style can be due to a fair amount of hops, making for a dry, malty quaffer. I went over to the local beer store and got a bottle of Schwarze Anna (which I hadn’t had in a year or so) to bring home and have to say, this was every bit as good.

Next beer or back to the beer list.
