The Staffelberg area is noted for both its hiking and beer so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there is some fine beer hiking to be had. On a recent trip researching such matters for my upcoming book Beer Hiking Bavaria, I stumbled upon a butcher-cum-brewer in Uetzing who proves quite handily that one can master two disciplines. Actually, he’s pretty good with names too, dubbing his perfectly paired establishment Metzgerbräu. Well, if you don’t speak German, it might not seem so cleaver but a Metzger is a butcher so it’s about as perfect a name as is the paring of one of his mouthwatering sausages with his equally tasty Lagerbier.
Metzgerbräu in Uetzing
Of course, all the great beer and sausages in the world does not a beer hike make, but Uetzing is not only a cute town in its own right but there are many great trails emanating from it, as well. Many of the circuits taking in multiple breweries are quite long and other routes lead you in one direction so I combined three trails to form a circuit. Circuits are great if you want to return to where you started and believe me, Metzgerbräu is one of those places you want to return to. As a matter of fact, I can’t wait to do just that!

Details for the hike coming soon in my upcoming book Beer Hiking Bavaria, available October 1st.
