Weiherer Hopferla (bottle)

unfiltered amber beer in wine glass
Weiherer Hopferla

Brewery: Kundmüller
Town: Viereth-Trundstadt (Weiher)
Style: Double India Pale Ale
Color: unfiltered amber
Head: rocky, lively, off-white, great lacework
Nose: floral hops, a touch of honey
Body: full-bodied, medium carbonation
Palate: quite hoppy from the get go but an underlying touch of honey
Finish: long, dry, bitter

Served: from a bottle bought at the brewery

Impression:  I didn’t see this until last minute at the brewery as I was only looking at the extensive draft menu. I decided to get a couple bottles to bring home as the regular draft IPA had been quite good. Fat Head is a well-respected brewery back home and the combination of Chinook, Citra, Equinox, Mosaic, Centennial, Warrior and Simcoe hops sounded quite interesting. With two malts and a 7.5% alcohol content, I figured it would still be well-balanced. It looked great on pouring and you certainly couldn’t fault the nose or initial flavor.  The finish was long and dry, too.  Still, it seemed to lack any real malt backbone and I found it not well-balanced at all. I guess I’m not so into IPAs as I used to be, having lived in Germany for eight years but that said,  I quite enjoyed their draft IPA. I think this one, while well-made, was a bit over the top for me. I recently had it on tap at the brewery and it was much more harmonious and balanced.

Next beer or back to the beer list.
